The Castle of Pandeli

The castle in Apitiki, a late medieval fortification that was built as an extension of a Byzantine castle on the site of an ancient acropolis. Inside the castle is the church of Panagia, build by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komninos in the 11th century AD together with the Castle of Patmos.

Portolago

Portolago – Lakki, the town built during the Italian period (1912-1943),  a mixture of Art Deco and Bauhaus that is known in architecture as Rationalism or Universalism. We will visit the market, the cinema, the Italian school, and the church of Agios Nikolaos – formerly San Francisco,

War Museum

The war museum-tunnel in Merikia, a testament to the important role that Leros played in the Second World War.

Virgin Kavouradena

Virgin Kavouradena in Xirokambos, one of the most beautiful churches on the island of Leros. Tradition has it that a fisherman collecting sea shells among the rocks saw the icon of the Virgin Mary lying on the rocks.

Agios Isidoros

The charming/romantic little chapel of Agios Isidoros. It is built on a cliff connected to the rest of the island by a narrow passage, making it easily accessible on foot. Many choose to tie the knot here!

Agia Kioura

The church of Agia Kiouras-Matronas, the most modern religious monument of the island.  The icons have been painted by political prisoners during the dictatirship. This makes Agia Matrona Kioura “a unique monument of modern history representing the agony and deprivation of freedom Greek people suffered during the dictatorship”.

World War II cemetery

The British World War II cemetery in Alinda. It is the burial place for 183 souls, of which 13 Sailors, 162 Soldiers and 4 Airmen from the United Kingdom who died during the Battle of Leros, in the Fall of 1943.

Belleni Tower

The Belleni Tower,  a combination of Italian, Roman, and Gothic influences. The Bellini Tower, a fascinating piece of architecture, houses the folklore museum and other important exhibits of the history of Leros.

During the tour we pass by Agia Marina (capital of the island), Platanos, Panteli, Plaka, Drymonas, Gourna, Kamara, Partheni, Alinda, so in essence we have seen every corner of the island of Leros!
